The “G20 of American Innovation Ecosystems”

Methodology & Evaluation Criteria

The American Venture Top 25 Innovation Ecosystems ranking evaluates the strength, maturity, and interconnectedness of entrepreneurial ecosystems from across the United States. Rather than relying solely on venture capital investment, startup valuations, or population size, the ranking takes a broader view of the infrastructure that enables innovation and entrepreneurship to thrive.

Key considerations include the presence of established startup communities, accelerators and incubators, venture capital networks, research universities, technology commercialization, corporate innovation, entrepreneurship support organizations, and major industry conferences and convenings. Particular emphasis is placed on the longevity and institutional depth of these ecosystems, recognizing that sustained investment in entrepreneurial infrastructure can be as important as recent growth or market momentum.

The ranking also considers the collective strength of multiple innovation hubs within a state or metropolitan region, rather than evaluating individual cities in isolation. For example, Texas benefits from the combined entrepreneurial economies of Austin, Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio, while North Carolina draws strength from its Research Triangle. The Washington, D.C., metropolitan region is evaluated as a unified ecosystem spanning D.C., Northern Virginia, and Maryland.
